Why I’m Not Doing NaNoWriMo2017

This isn’t going to be a snarky, tee-spilling post where I trash talk NaNoWriMo because if circumstances allowed it, I would love to participate. The problem is, I physically do not have time to outline and write my WIP.

Life was pretty quiet and by September I was beginning to formulate my outline. Then by the last week of September, I suddenly had two jobs, college full-time, had driving lessons with an instructor and my dad, and was doing an online literature course. Now, I leave the house at seven o’clock every morning, and am lucky to get home by nine-thirty on a night. My health issues (anaemia and JHS) also mean I need a lot of sleep, so I basically get home and crash.

This means I’m faced with having to decide which of my plans I have to sacrifice: reading, blogging, or writing.

Reading is the easiest to fit around my schedule as I can just pull out my book when I have a spare ten minutes or on my breaks, and I’ve found blogging is fairly similar. Where it takes much more concentration and effort to blog than it does to read, it’s just a fraction of the effort it takes to write.

Therefore, it’s just not practical to take part in NaNoWriMo this month. I’m not not writing, but putting pressure on myself to write 50,000 words in a month on top of everything else going on in my life right now is not only impractical but also unsafe. I’m doing okay at the moment, but only okay. Piling more on myself isn’t going to help the situation.

So there won’t be any weekly NaNo updates from me, unfortunately. I will, however, be reading other people’s! Let me know if you’re participating this year and I’ll make sure to spur you on!

Thanks for reading, lovelies.

See you in the next one!

  1. I’m relieved to see I’m not the only one sitting out this year! (And all years, to be honest. I start but fall off the train very quickly.) October through December are just way too busy, really. Too many holidays, family obligations, and work picks up loads. If it were in February or March, I’d have a much better shot.

    1. You could always do a camp by yourself. Or join a writer discord, they tend to be active throughout the year. You can find a bunch of them on the NaNo forums I believe.
