I was provided a copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

There’s Someone Inside Your House is the first thriller/horror from Stephanie Perkins, who usually writes contemporary romance (Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door, Isla and the Happily Ever After). I read Anna and didn’t love it as much as everyone else but I put that down mostly to the fact that I’m not the biggest fan of romance. Mystery/thriller/horrors on the other hand, are my jam, so I thought I’d give Stephanie Perkins another shot.

The book follows a girl named Makani and her group of friends who all attend a high school where their classmates are being murdered one by one. From that synopsis, you really expect the tension and suspense to be high. You expect the book to be scary.

It isn’t. I didn’t find this book scary at all. I thought the murders were overly gory and gimmicky without actually being impactful, and the tension was sort of non-existent.

Instead of being a thriller, this is primarily a romance book following the growth of the relationship between Makani and a boy named Ollie. It’s a fairly average romance in my opinion (again, it isn’t a genre I generally gravitate to so you could really enjoy it).

However, I still enjoyed this book. Why? Because it was fun. Reading this was the equivalent of watching a very shitty teen horror movie at a sleepover. As bad as they are and as much as you mock it, you’re still entertained, and that’s how I felt about this book. This is definitely a guilty pleasure book (if you have them) and will keep you reading as long as you don’t expect King-level horror or suspense.

I also really liked the setting. It’s set in the autumn time and with it being September and beginning to get cold again in Britain, I read it at the perfect time. It gave me all the pumpkin spice latte, falling leaves, halloween, oversized jumpers vibes and I lapped it up like the basic bitch I am.

It isn’t a book I am going to remember and it won’t be on any favourites lists, but if you’re looking for autumn cozy feels and teen horror nostalgia, I really do recommend this book.

  1. Great review. I read this last week and my thoughts are fairly similar. It’s really not scary and has very little tension.

I did like the romance but then I’m a sucker for any kind of romance and absolutely loved Anna and the French Kiss.
